What’s different about University Christian Church?
- We are a progressive congregation that takes the Bible seriously, but not always literally. Doubters are welcome here.
- We are an Open and Affirming Congregation that welcomes people of all sexual orientations and gender identities into the full life and leadership of the Church. We are a proud member of the Disciples LGBTQ+ Alliance , the Open & Affirming Coalition of the United Church of Christ, and were the first Open and Affirming Disciples Congregation in Southern California.
- We are a multiracial/multicultural congregation that openly welcomes people of all races and ethnicities to help weave the diverse tapestry of our community of faith. We are always striving to be a pro-reconciling/anti-racist congregation.
- We are an environmentally conscious congregation that cares for God’s creation and strives to be good stewards of it. We are home to the San Diego Climate Hub and are a founding member of the San Diego Green New Deal Alliance.
- We are a peace and justice congregation. We believe that God cares deeply for those who are oppressed and marginalized and make our mission to those in need the center of our ministry. Take a look at our outreach ministries.

Denominational Affiliations
We are proud members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, both of which are denominations that encourage individual thought and Biblical interpretation. The identity statement of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) states: “We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.” A popular refrain in the United Church of Christ is “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you’re welcome here.”
